Counseling addresses the emotional, social, work, school and physical health concerns people may have at different stages in their lives, focusing on typical life stresses and more severe issues with which people may struggle as individuals and as a part of families, groups and organizations. Counseling psychologists help people improve their sense of well‐being, alleviate feelings of distress and resolve crises. They also provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of more severe psychological symptoms.
There are different types of adult and adolescent counseling.
- Individual. Individual counseling is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times in life. Individual counseling can help one deal with many personal topics in life such as anger, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, marriage and relationship challenges, parenting problems, school difficulties, career changes, etc.
- Family. If your family is going through a rough patch, you may start to wonder – what is family counseling? By definition, family counseling is a form of therapy that addresses issues affecting the healthy functioning of a family. The treatment is effective for helping people to overcome painful periods like a significant transition, substance use disorders, or mental health problems.
- Group. A counseling group is usually comprised of six to eight students who meet face to face with one or two trained group therapists and talk about what most concerns them. Members listen to each other and openly express thoughts and feelings about what other members do or say. These interactions give members an opportunity to increase understanding of self and others, try out new ways of being with others, and learn more effective ways to interact.
